IS SILVER GOOD FOR ENGAGEMENT RINGS?
In recent months, we have been asked a lot about the suitability of silver as a metal for an engagement ring. We are seeing more and more brides try to find wedding rings to sit alongside a silver engagement ring. With the internet and even retailers in famous jewellery quarters starting to offer affordable engagement rings using silver, you might be tempted to think that it is a good option.
HOWEVER... while this metal is popular for fashion rings, silver is not ideal for engagement rings for a number of reasons:
- Softness and Durability
Silver is a relatively soft metal, making it prone to scratches, dents, and bending. Engagement rings are usually worn daily for many years and typically need to withstand a lot of wear and tear. Silver wears very quickly resulting in weakened settings and lost stones. You will find that the ring is easily bent out of shape especially if you enjoy an active lifestyle. We have had customers who have experienced repeated problems within the first few months, especially if the ring is a delicate design.
- Tarnishing
Silver is prone to tarnishing meaning that regular polishing will be required to keep the ring looking its best. Tarnishing happens when exposed to air, moisture and everyday chemicals. Metals such as platinum or white gold do not tarnish in the same way.
- Allergic Reactions
Sterling silver is alloyed with other metals, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. Platinum is the best option for those individuals with sensitive skin.
- Tradition
As silver is often affordable but less durable, it is more suitable for fashion or costume jewellery. Engagement rings are seen as symbols of lifelong commitment, which is why long-lasting metals like gold and platinum are traditionally used.
- Wedding Rings
When you want to choose a wedding ring, it is always advisable that the metals of both rings are the same to reduce wear and tear. Many brides are opting for diamond set wedding rings (similar to eternity rings). However, we would not recommend a silver wedding ring be set with diamonds. As the metal is soft, the ring is easily bent out of shape compromising the setting of the stones.
Alternatives to Silver
Other metals like white gold, palladium, or platinum offer durability, tarnish resistance, and better suitability for fine jewellery. Gold is available in different grades, usually 9ct or 18ct in the UK (and 14ct on imported jewellery) to suit every budget.
We definitely recommend you choose a more durable metal than silver. But if trying to keep to a budget, think about adapting the gemstones you add to the design. With new advances in technology, there are so many more options available for diamonds and gemstones. If you need any help or advice, please do contact us at online@lancejames.co.uk.
